The Daajing Giids Heritage Housing Society (DGHHS) and the Daajing Giids Housing
Development Society (DGHDS) are sister societies in Daajing Giids on Haida Gwaii, BC. They have been providing subsidized and affordable housing in the community since 1982. The mandate of both societies, which share the same Board of Directors, is to provide a range of affordable housing options for seniors, people with disabilities and those with low incomes in the local community.

The Heritage Housing Societies own or operate several properties in Daajing Giids, with a current total of 39 units:

1. Heritage House is an 11-unit independent living building for seniors aged 65
and older.
2. Cedar Place is a four-unit independent living building, consisting of two double bedroom units and two single bedroom apartments. Each unit has a heat pump and its own laundry machines.
3. One detached family home for independent living.
4. Yew Wood Place is a proposed independent living building at 609 Second Avenue. It is in the planning stages and is not yet built. It will be a three-storey structure with 22 units and an elevator. There will be 18 single bedroom units, three double bedroom units, and one triple bedroom unit. There will be on site laundry facilities for residents.
5. Martin Manor is a four-unit assisted living facility, in which residents receive two hot meals per day and assistance with light housekeeping. It is staffed for six hours per day. Assisted living is for those who are not able to do their own cooking or housekeeping
6. Kal Naay Alder House is a 19-unit supportive living project, owned by the Province and operated by DGHHS under contract. It is staffed 24 hours per day, and was built under the “Rapid Response to Homelessness" program, and is intended for residents of Haida Gwaii who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Kal Naay Alder House operates under the “Housing First” principle. This approach views housing as the foundation for life improvement and enables access to permanent housing without prerequisites or conditions beyond those of a typical renter. Before an individual can successfully address any social, economic, health or addiction issues, they need food and a stable, secure home. Kal Naay Alder House also provides support staff who offer assistance to residents in upgrading their life skills and in becoming more self sufficient. Two nutritious meals per day are provided.
